Commonly Asked Questions

Why do we give?

“But just as you excel in everything–in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in complete earnestness and in your love for us–see that you also excel in this grace of giving.” 2 Corinthians 8:7

We believe the Biblical perspective on stewardship is that everything we have (money and possessions) and everything we are (gifts and talents) is a stewardship from God. He owns us and all we have. Our role is to manage what we have been entrusted with according to His desires.

What is a tithe and offering?

Tithe

The word tithe literally means one tenth. Generally understood, the principle of tithing is cheerfully giving one tenth of your income to the work of God through the local church. The principle of tithing is taught throughout the Scriptures and is an important part of enabling the Gospel to continue going out into the community and to the ends of the earth. Many believers will choose to give more than ten percent as they are led by the Holy Spirit. Practically, the tithe funds the ongoing ministry of the church. Each year, the church develops and approves a ministry budget including ministry costs, operational costs, and personnel costs. The tithe of the church is designed to meet those budgetary needs.

Offering

An offering is a gift above and beyond the tithe. While tithing is a spiritual discipline, an offering may be given for a specific need and for a specific time period. Offerings are not typically designated to meet regular budgeted expenses but instead fund special projects or initiatives. Whether tithing or tithing and giving an offering, Scripture indicates that we should give cheerfully and generously! Christ-followers recognize that all we have is truly God’s and we are stewards of His resources.

Once finalized and approved, church members have the opportunity to evaluate the budget and ask questions. At an appointed time following the Q&A, the church body votes to approve the budget. Once approved, ministry staff are required to spend within budgeted amounts in each ministry area. Business meetings open to the church body are held quarterly giving up-to-date financial reports regarding income and expenditures.
