Genesis 2:18, Psalm 121:1-2, Romans 15:13

MESSAGE PREVIEW

This weekend will be a special service we are calling: “Veteran’s Day – A Story of Hope.” Pastor Brian will be joined by Joey Molis and Melissa Davies. Melissa will be sharing her story of tragedy turned to hope through the work and power of Jesus Christ. Come ready to listen to this powerful story. Pastor Brian will conclude with a short message of encouragement and challenge to all those who are facing difficult times.

THREE IMPORTANT THOUGHTS

  1. Never Fight Alone
    1. Genesis 2:18 ESV “Then the Lord God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.”
  2. Know Where Your Help Comes from Ultimately
    1. Psalm 121:1-2 ESV “I lift up my eyes to the hills. From where does my help come?
My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth.”
  3. Place Your Hope in Christ
    1. Romans 15:13 ESV “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.”

ICEBREAKER QUESTIONS

Use the following questions/discussion to get the conversation started…

As you begin your time this week, challenge your group to share any God Moments they experienced over the past week:

Q: How have you seen God at work in your life or the life of someone you know this past week?

Take time to pray and celebrate these things as a group!

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS: Ask and discuss the following questions.

Q: Tell us your thoughts on the story that we heard this morning. What spoke to you or touched you the most about what you heard?

Q: Read Genesis 2:18 and Ecclesiastes 2:9-12. What do these passages teach us about our need for community and others in our life?

Q: Has there ever been a time when you tried to fight a battle or face a challenge alone, but realized your need for others to help? How did choosing to not fight alone help you face this battle differently?

Q: How have others supported you through a difficult or challenging time? How can we, as followers of Jesus, practically lend support and encouragement to others when they walk through difficulty?

Q: Read Psalm 121:1-2. What does it say about the One who gives us help? How can this encourage us when we face difficult times?

Q: Read Romans 15:13. What does Paul say is the outcome of God’s filling us with his power and Spirit? How have you seen God bring peace to your own life in the midst of difficulty, challenge, or loss?

Q: How can we as individuals or even as a group, reach out and help support those who are battling loss, grief, anxiety, depression, PTSD, or other specific challenges? What about veterans and those who serve?

Q: What is your personal “take-away” from this week’s message? What is one specific thing the Lord spoke to you this week?

Q: What is one specific “action step” you are going to take this week to apply what Jesus has taught you today?

WRAP-UP:

As you conclude this week’s gathering, take time to thank God for Melissa and her story of hope. Thank God for his goodness and faithfulness not just to her, but His goodness and faithfulness in your own life.

Ask your group to share the names of people they know who are facing a difficult time. Ask the group if any of them are facing a challenge or struggle currently. Pray for those names and situations mentioned.

*Note: If someone in your group mentions a specific need or challenge, don’t just pray for them, but see if there is a way for the group to support and serve them in this time!
